Above it you will find Waialae Iki, a gated community and the Wiliwilinui Trail, an intermediate trail which starts at the top of the Waialae Iki subdivision. As the H-1 freeway ends turn left up Laukahi Steet just past Kalani High School. You must go through security and get a pass before entering the upper end of the subdivision. There is plenty good parking at the entrance of the trail. Nearby communities are Aina Koa, Blackpoint, Kai Nani, Old Kahala, Waialae Beach, Waialae Gardens, Waialae Golf Course, Waialae Iki, Waialae Nui, Aina Haina, Wailupe, Hawaii Loa Ridge, Niu Peninsula & Beach, and Niu Valley. On the west side you will see Kaimuki, Lower Palolo, Maunalani Heights, St. Louis Heights, St. Louis Heights, and Upper Palolo.
Traveling to the east end of “Kalani Highway”, you will see Koko Crater, Olomana and Bellows Beach towards the windward side, and breathtaking views of Maunalua Bay at the base or entrance of Hawaii Kai. Just up the street on Puuikena Drive, there is also a quick, yet moderate to steep hike. To get to the hike, drive up the mountain road through the Mariner’s Ridge (in Hawaii Kai) community. The trail head is on a cul-de-sac, drive to the very top of Kaluanui Road in Mariner’s Ridge and park at the end. You’ll see a metal sign leading you to the trailhead on the east side of the last residence. Once you reach the top, there are magnificent views from the ridge of the southern edge of the Ko’olau range.

Kahala-Resort-Hotel-Hawaii
1Kahala-Hawaii
Here you have the Kahala Hotel also known as the Kahala Resort (formerly the Kahala Mandarin) next door with world class food and a relaxing beach. Try the $18 hamburger. Not twice as good as a $9 Teddy’s Bigger Burger, but it sure tastes good with plantation tea sitting on the lanai by the beach.
The Kahala townhouse complex located at 4999 Kahala Drive in Honolulu is a leasehold property. The average sales price over the last year has been $153,000. The lease expires in 2027, so you can only get financing with a 13 year loan, which does not exist. You have to finance it yourself, get a private loan or get owner financing. The lease rent renegotiates in 2017 (can go up or down).
For comparison, if you financed a $200,000 property with a private loan at 60% of the sales price for $120,000, payments would be approx ~ $1400, + $960 maintenance fees + $2240 lease rent = $4600/month.
I’m not saying you should buy a different or more expensive property, but the lease rent in this case could finance more than 100% of the price. In other words, you could buy a property 100% more expensive with the same payments and probably get a better interest rate with the same down.
On the other hand, this is one of the prime spots on the island. I know many people that would love to live here for $4600/month. That is close to the going rental rate there from September through March. Some of them go for more or less. It is 1-month minimum rental if you rent it out.
